N.J. Lawmakers Pass Legislation Banning 'Drunken Droning'

Flying a drone while drunk or high could soon land you in legal trouble in New Jersey, where state lawmakers just unanimously approved a bill that would make it illegal to operate a drone while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, a Democratic sponsor of the bill, said that the kind of dangerous incidents they're hoping to prevent include near-collisions with aircraft and interference with firefighting.

It's unclear if outgoing Republican Governor Chris Christie plans to sign the measure before he leaves office next week. The blood alcohol limit under the law would be 0.08 percent, which is the same as it is for drunk driving, and violators could face a $1,000 fine and up to six months in prison. The  legislation would also ban use of a drone to knowingly endanger someone's life or property, harass wildlife, or interfere with the security of a correctional facility. Those offenses would carry up to 18 months in jail and a $10,000 fine. (Endgadget)
