Some Sandwiches Contribute To Global Warming

A team at the University of Manchester in England, the country where the sandwich was born, announced the results of the first ever look at the carbon footprints of sandwiches. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Making and eating sandwiches at home is the best way to go if you must eat them.
  • If they contain pork there’s a big carbon footprint. Cheese and prawns follow right behind.
  • An all day breakfast sandwich (egg, bacon, sausage) created the same carbon dioxide as driving a car 12 miles.
  • If you reduce the amount of cheese and meat you eat, that would help.

The study figured in the environmental impact of raising various sandwich ingredients, processing them, transporting them, packaging them and refrigerating them before purchase and consumption.
