Whether it’s for heath concerns or diet reasons, just about every food product on the planet now has some gluten-free variant. In now appears, however, that the gluten-free bug’s spreading beyond the culinary world. You can now find four…count ‘em…FOUR different brands of condoms.
A spokesman for one of those condom-makers, Lola, conceded that the vast majority of condoms are already gluten-free, however, the lubricant they use may not be. That’s where they might use it as an “emulsifier, stabilizer, and/or filler.” So, for the very small percentage of the population who do have a legitimate allergy to gluten, this might serve a purpose (to make you feel better about things).
Dr. Cynthia Rudert, a medical advisor for the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America and for Celiac Disease Foundation, isn’t impressed. She says that of the thousands of patients she’s dealt with, not once has this issue come up for any of them.
And by the way, experts generally say that there are no real health benefits to a gluten-free condom, but they won’t hurt you either. However, if you’re the type that must buy organic and gluten-free everything because it makes you feel better about yourself and the world, then knock yourself out.
