Lithuanian Couple Wins World Wife Carrying Championship

he World Wife Carrying Championship is in it’s 23rd year and was held Saturday in Finland. In case you didn’t know, the idea was spawned by the 19th century tale of Ronkainen the Robber, who tested aspiring members of his gang by forcing them to carry sacks of grain or live pigs over a similar course…and wife stealing.

Fifty three men kept the proud tradition up by slinging their wives or partners over their shoulders and trudging for an hour. It’s not just walking either. It is also running, wading through a slippery pool and getting through an obstacle course. Couples from 13 countries, including the U.S. qualified to compete for the ultimate title in front of thousands of fans.

A Lithuanian couple defeated a six time champion to take the trophy. Finland, by the way is home to more than this unique competition. They also have hosted the world boot throwing, air guitar and mobile phone throwing competitions, among others.
