Space Billboards Are Coming To A Sky Near You

If you think there's a ton of advertisement all around us now, wait till you hear what one Russian company is planning on doing with the night sky. A Russian company called StartRocket says it’s going to launch a cluster of mini-satellites into space that will act as an “orbital billboard,” projecting enormous advertisements into the night sky like artificial constellations. It looks like they have their first client as well. PepsiCo, which will use the system to promote a “campaign against stereotypes and unjustified prejudices against gamers” on behalf of an energy drink called Adrenaline Rush. StartRocket claims that this service could also be used for advertising and information services as well as for governmental use during “catastrophic emergencies.” They say this system of satellites would orbit Earth from a distance of roughly 250-310 miles and would display three to four messages per day. According to its own timeline, StartRocket is hoping to complete the first test launch of its so-called Orbital Display in 2021.
