Rare Black Supermoon Will “Wow” Stargazers Tonight

We use a lot of names for the moon phases these days, but here’s one you’ll want to remember: black supermoon.

What is that? A black moon is pretty rare and happens when there are two new moons in the same month. A new moon is when the sun's light falls on the far side of the moon that we don't see. A super moon is when it is at its closest point to our planet, which it will be on Wednesday. Because the sun will be on the other side, it's not going to be easy to spot and most people will likely miss it.

The best viewing will take place in North America and the black moon, which will be tough to spot, will be at its full phase around 11:12 p.m. ET.

It’s a bonus that meteor showers are also ramping up and the Milky Way is very visible now. Enjoy the celestial show!
