On Sunday, Julian Hernandez and his 12-year-old son set out for a hike in Southern Utah’s Red Mountain Trail area but soon found themselves lost. As they looked for a shelter, they came across a fully stocked green backpack containing food, water, and emergency supplies, which helped them make it through the night until they were rescued the next morning.
It turns out, the backpack belonged to 15-year-old Levi Dittman, who’d gotten stuck on the same trail in early January. He had to leave his gear behind when search and rescue teams brought him to safety. At the time, he assumed he was out the $300 that the backpack and supplies had set him back.
On Monday, Levi and his mother retrieved the backpack from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, where Julian had returned it. He expressed gratitude for the supplies that helped him and his son through the tough situation. Levi was happy his gear had turned out to be useful and his mom, Gretchen, is calling the story a miracle, saying she believes it was part of a larger plan to help someone in need.
